My reading and extensive work in men’s groups has led me to the conclusion that many men, especially those who have come of age during the post feminist era, are not as comfortable with their masculinity and consequently have found the challenges of relationship and life choices more difficult to meet. We must make a distinction between gender equality and gender neutrality. Utilizing a new paradigm of masculinity men should be able to express their masculinity without falling into the historical patterns of patriarchy. Women can have equal pay and live in a world where gender is not a basis for discrimination and still be feminine. Artificial attempts to negate our biology will not work. Instead we need to respect our differences while being mindful of how those differences can enhance a society that values fairness and cooperation for the benefit of both genders. We can be equal from a human rights perspective but at the same time be different in our gender roles.
